S.A.V.A. Client Testimonials- Nicole Moore

When I first met Anyania Muse at Mills College I knew that there was something about her that I wanted to stay close to. Listening to her share her experiences and wisdom was always inspiring to me. At the time I was fresh out of high school and trying to come into adulthood many miles away from my family.

After freshman year I had to return home to Chicago because of financial situations. I had to start my education over and during my first semester at junior college I became pregnant with my son. At the time of my pregnancy I feared that my educational goals would have to take a back seat. My son’s father was not interested in supporting us in any way. Members of my family were obviously disappointed. Some counted me as another statistic that had managed to throw away all her potential. This was even expressed to me vocally.

At this point in my life I felt very low. Even though I had a small support system, I felt as if they were unable to truly relate to me. Anya has been a constant voice of support and encouragement. She convinced me that if I don’t invest in myself and continue my education, I would be no good to my son or myself. Through her transparency, she provided me with sound advice on how to move forward with my goals. I look at her life as a testament to faith, hard work, and having the courage to move forward despite adversity.

I now have my Associate’s Degree and I’m working on my Bachelor’s Degree in English while raising a preschooler. I believe wholeheartedly in the work that SAVA does because it provides a space where people like me can gain support and resources to change their lives for the better. I am truly grateful for Anya and SAVA and hope to be able to pay forward all that she has given me.
